Expansive clay is a soil that is very easily affected by air. This causes expansive clay to have several adverse properties such as large swelling and shrinkage properties and has a high plasticity index value which results in the soil under certain air conditions can experience changes in volume. With the change in soil volume due to low water content can cause subsidence in the building above it (Settlements). In addition to subsidence, the high water content in the soil also causes the soil to expand so that it can cause the building to lift (Uplift). This study aims to investigate the bearing capacity of clay soil expansion, in this case the CBR value of the soil tested in two conditions: unsoaked and soaked. In addition, the amount of expansion can also be known from the soaked CBR test. To support the main research, a property index study was conducted to explain the expansion behavior of clay soil. In this study, bentonite was used to obtain the required expansive soil characteristics with a composition of 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% bentonite. Bentonite is known to have a large swelling capacity, easily absorbs air, and has a high plasticity index because it contains the mineral montmorillonite. The results of the study showed that the CBR value of the embankment soil sample, bentonite, and the bentonite mixture were categorized as good for use as a base soil. Meanwhile, from the results of the soaked CBR test, the CBR value of the embankment soil sample, bentonite, and the bentonite mixture were categorized as poor for use as a subgrade because they had a low CBR value and large swelling
