Prevalence and Risk Factors for Surgical Site Infection at PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping Hospital, Yogyakarta

Surgical Site Infection (SSI) remains one of the most common healthcare-associated infections and contributes to increased morbidity, prolonged hospitalization, and higher healthcare costs, making its prevention an important priority in surgical services. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of SSI and identify patient-related and procedure-related risk factors associated with its occurrence among postoperative patients at PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping Hospital, Yogyakarta. A quantitative analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted using secondary data obtained from medical records of 150 postoperative patients selected through total sampling. Data on demographic characteristics, comorbidities, diabetes mellitus, duration of surgery, length of hospital stay, type of surgery, and SSI incidence were collected and analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi-square tests with a significance level of p<0.05. The results showed that the prevalence of SSI was 12.0% (18 of 150 patients). Significant factors associated with SSI were diabetes mellitus (p=0.014), comorbid conditions (p=0.009), duration of surgery exceeding two hours (p=0.002), and length of hospital stay exceeding five days (p=0.001). Age, sex, and type of surgery were not significantly associated with SSI occurrence. In conclusion, SSI remains a substantial postoperative complication, and both patient-related and procedure-related factors contribute to its incidence. Early identification and management of modifiable risk factors are essential to reduce SSI rates, improve patient safety, and enhance the quality of surgical care
